Ron Lemire: Five Decades of Movement, Healing, and the Liquid Trainer

What happens when a marine engineer, blues harmonica player, and bodyguard for John Denver spends fifty years studying how the human body moves, heals, and finds its center? You get Ron Lemire, one of the most quietly remarkable movement teachers working today.

Ron joined CeeJay Barnaby on the Supernormalized podcast for a wide-ranging conversation that touched on nervous system health, proprioceptive training, water-based movement tools, whirling dervish practice, astrology, and what it was like riding through Aspen in a pink convertible Cadillac at minus twenty-five degrees to work on John Denver’s frozen spine.

The Nervous System as the Map

Ron opens with a foundational idea that shapes everything he teaches. The nervous system is not just a communication highway, it is the mind itself. A thought is an electrical impulse. Movement is a response to gravity. And most of us, living in a world of information overload, are running in what Ron calls sympathetic overload, producing cortisol at a rate that disturbs sleep, digestion, and the body’s natural ability to restore itself.

The antidote, according to Ron, is not necessarily slowing everything down. It is learning how to access the quiet zone, that meditative state athletes call being in the zone, where options feel plentiful and time seems to stretch. Getting there, he says, happens more through coordination and sensing than through force and intensity.

Why Coordination Matters More Than Strength

One of the most compelling threads in this conversation is Ron’s explanation of why bilateral coordination, training both sides of the body equally, is so central to longevity, injury prevention, and even mental clarity.

He traces it back to crawling. When babies crawl, they wire the nervous system through opposite hand and opposite leg movement, building proprioceptive awareness and connecting both hemispheres of the brain. When we stand up and start walking, we lose that tangible ground connection. And when we train only our dominant side, as most Western athletic traditions historically encouraged, we create imbalances that eventually lead to injury and reduced performance.

Ron points to the cultural shift that began in the 1960s as a turning point. The arrival of yoga, martial arts, Ayurvedic medicine, and Eastern movement practices into Western culture began training people on both sides. Kata in karate. Both sides in yoga. The result, over decades, has been a gradual improvement in human alignment and kinesthetic awareness.

The Liquid Trainer: Water as Teacher

The Liquid Trainer is Ron’s invention, a water-filled bag used as a movement tool that teaches ground reaction force, bilateral coordination, and circular movement patterns all at once. The weighted fluid breaks the rigidity of the dominant side. As the practitioner learns to send the water from one end of the bag to the other with equal force on both sides, the corpus callosum, the bridge between the brain’s two hemispheres, begins to receive more balanced input.

The result is not just physical. Writers become more creative. Athletes find flow more easily. Anyone who sits too much begins to rediscover their posture and their presence. The system works in three levels, from foundational plane awareness and foot placement, through lateral and circular stepping, to full improvisational movement flow.

The Whirling Dervish and the Spinning Top

Ron spent 1001 days training as a whirling dervish under a teacher who had learned the practice in Turkey. The tradition traces back to the poet Rumi, who began turning around a pole after losing his beloved teacher Shams, moving to the rhythm of a goldsmith hammering gold.

When CeeJay asks how Ron overcame the nausea of spinning, the answer is elegant. When you are truly in your center, there is nothing to be nauseous about. It is only the wobble that creates discomfort. Like a spinning top that wobbles until it finds its axis and then becomes perfectly still, the human spine is the governing axis of the body. Find the center and the spinning becomes stillness.

Ten Years on the Road with John Denver

Ron’s story of meeting John Denver is one of the most entertaining in the episode. He drove a pink 1957 Cadillac convertible with a makeshift roof through minus twenty-five degree Aspen weather to work on a man whose body was so locked up he could barely bend over. Three days and three treatments later, John Denver could move freely again.

What followed was nearly a decade on the road as Denver’s personal bodyguard, cook, herbalist, and all-round trusted companion. Ron cooked macrobiotic food on tour, educated Denver about food quality and natural salts, and helped shape the environmental consciousness that made Denver one of the first celebrity environmentalists. The story of Denver visiting a coral reef that Jacques Cousteau had filmed decades earlier, only to find it had become a desert of sand, is quietly devastating and explains a great deal about the music Denver made.

Astrology as Pattern Recognition

Ron uses astrology the way a sailor uses weather patterns, not to predict the future with certainty, but to read the energetic conditions of the moment and adjust accordingly. He describes the current planetary alignment, with Uranus entering Gemini, Neptune in Aries, and Pluto in Aquarius, as a rare celestial configuration that has not occurred in over 150 years. The shift from earth and water elements to air and fire signals, in his reading, a period of accelerated awakening, increased mental clarity, and a move toward quantum understanding.

His advice for navigating this period is grounded and practical. Get physically grounded first. Understand ground reaction force. Train both sides of the body. And stay in what he calls the beginner’s mind, open, curious, and not yet stuck.
